Kindergarten Curriculum

Our Kindergarten ( K-5) is offered as a full-day program. Each day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30p.m. The day is filled with many opportunities for exploration, learning, expression, developing friendships, and active play. Due to a smaller class size, we can offer a very friendly, safe, and challenging experience. Lots of individual attention is maintained as we practice and learn new academics.

Free play and unstructured time is a valuable part of our schedule. Unstructured time lets a child make choices. It encourages creativity and independence. Play also allows children this age the opportunity to develop social skills and solve problems. Children learn how to recognize and respond to others’ feelings and needs. All this is under the Christian perspective which guides our behaviors.

Music and Art is used in each area of curriculum. Creative movement helps children focus physical energy and helps us learn new words to gain a better understanding of language. It is also just fun and beautiful as well!

Reading, Phonics and Language Arts have prime importance in our room. This includes:

  • Daily news
  • Daily journals with illustrations and eventual writing of ideas
  • Fiction and non-fiction books, poetry, fairytales provide for discussion, and analysis
  • Phonetic spelling and reading is modeled and practiced

The Houghton Mifflin curriculum serves as a guide along with Handwriting Without Tears.

Math, Social Studies and Science follow guidelines found in Houghton Mifflin curriculums.

Religion time is precious. We are a Lutheran school and follow Concordia Publishing materials. There are daily devotions and prayer time. The children sing once a month in church and also are part of a special Christmas Service and Spring Musical. Chapel is each Wednesday for ½ hour.

Fieldtrips are scheduled one per month. Experiential learning is best, and due to their curiosity, we learn many new things by being out in the community. There are also service projects offered monthly which organizes our students in multi-graded groups.

Guests and visitors are welcome. We have Grandparent Readers who visit each week. We also like to cook and bake things

All this wrapped up among outdoor recesses, snack times, lunch, and a quiet rest time make for a well rounded Kindergarten year
